How Riding the Bus in the Rain Can Lead You To Love.
Forget all the reasons it won’t work out and believe the one reason it will. - Unknown
5 years ago I made a decision that completely changed my life and made my most sacred dream come true.
At the time it didn’t really seem like a life-changing decision, it was just another rainy Sunday in Seattle. I had a date planned for 4 pm that day with a man I met on a dating app, we were going to meet at a coffee shop across town.
I almost didn’t go. I didn’t want to take the bus in the pouring rain on a Sunday afternoon in January. I’d rather stay in bed and watch Netflix. The easy decision would be for me to stay home, comfortable.
The hard decision would be for me to get on that bus in the rain. I had been on dozens of dates before that hadn’t worked out. If I was solely basing my decision on past experiences, I wouldn’t have gone.
I would've just assumed that this date wouldn’t work out and that I got off my couch for nothing. I wasn’t any closer to my dream of finding love, so why would this time be any different?
It wasn’t that I didn’t want to meet this particular date, it was more so that I didn’t want to face rejection again. But instead of succumbing to my fears, I chose to take control of my destiny and go on that date.
One year before this day I made a commitment to myself. I knew that if I desired to find love, I would have to push myself outside my comfort zone. I would have to believe that it was in the cards for me, even without any evidence.
In that year before this day, I went on a deep inner journey. I discovered the real me and what I had to offer to someone else. I healed lifelong limiting beliefs that love wasn’t possible for me. I showed myself love and care for the first time in my life.
It was in that year that I learned about the power of the Universe. That when you declare a dream, the Universe gets to work to make it happen. I realized that I didn’t get to control the how or timing, but I did get to decide it was possible for me.
I learned the deep power of surrender. Surrendering to what was already planned for me. I decided to love myself deeply and create a full life that I loved. I realized that I didn’t need love to save me, but I desired it to make my life even fuller.
With this newfound self-love, I started to approach the dating world differently. I no longer attached myself to people or ideas right away. I connected with the Universe daily, reminding myself that it would happen at the right time.
But I also knew that I would have to take some action, I couldn’t just sit back and expect my person to magically appear. I entered back into the dating world feeling hopeful and excited. I was ready to meet someone special.
So on this particular day, I knew I had to go on the date. Even in the pouring rain on public transportation. I would have to face the possibility of rejection, knowing that it was just another part of my journey.
This commitment to my dream is what brought me face-to-face with the idea of surrender. Surrendering to the unfolding of my life and my desires even if I had no clue how they were going to happen.
That’s the beauty and uneasiness of surrender. It forces you to trust in something bigger than yourself. It makes you live fully in the present moment even though we spend our lives running from it.
The present moment can feel scary because we have to accept where we are in life. The present moment can remind you of what you long to have but don’t. The present moment is where you have the power to choose a new, unknown path.
I could have come up with a million reasons why I should have stayed home that day. Instead, I chose to focus on the one reason why I was going to go; because I had full faith that my dream of love would come true, whether it was this date or not.
So I got myself on that bus and made it to the coffee shop even though my hair was frizzy and my umbrella broke. I knew that getting there was the hardest part and as soon as I walked through the door I felt at ease.
I felt proud of myself for showing up even in the face of uncertainty. I surrendered to the moment and let the experience unfold as it would.
Little did I know that I would meet the love of my life that day. We talked for four hours and our conversation ended only because the cafe was closing. I knew this time was different, I knew this connection was worth exploring.
Over the next several months we built an amazing friendship that blossomed into a beautiful love story. We would stay up until 3 am talking about our dreams and fears, not realizing what the time on the clock was.
It was in those first few months that I realized this is the person I was supposed to be with. This is what a soulmate meant and my dream had come true. All my years of dreaming of it, and being intentional with my actions had brought the most amazing partner into my life.
When we decided to combine lives and solidify our future, we didn’t have a big wedding or fancy honeymoon. Instead, we exchanged vows that were from our hearts. And in the face of a health crisis right before our marriage, the love between us only grew stronger.
Now 5 years later I laugh that I even considered not going on that first date. If I stayed at home watching Netflix I would have never seen the fruition of a lifelong dream.
If I had never surrendered and trusted my life path, I would miss out on the chance to fall deeply in love with an amazing man.
Since I experienced this beautiful unfolding of a manifestation, I now know that the Universe always has a plan for you if you’re willing to trust in it. If you can weather the temporary storms and keep going despite the setbacks, your dreams will come true.
If there’s a desire in your heart that you’re seeking, I promise you it’s out there. All you need to do is trust and let go. Trust that this dream is in your heart for a reason and the Universe never makes a mistake.
Practice the art of surrender and live in the moment. You can start small by releasing those things you cannot control. Your only job is to keep following your heart and let the Universe figure out how to make it happen.
You can even start today by taking small actions toward your dream, even if it feels hopeless. Decide today that you’re going to believe in yourself and your life, even when it feels against you.
If it’s a loving partnership you are seeking, start by loving the person in the mirror. Realize all the amazing qualities you have to offer to another person.
Visualize that dream relationship as if you can feel it happening. Become a magnet for love by sending love to all living things around you.
And finally, say yes when new opportunities present themselves. This is the Universe trying to get your attention. I chose to get on the bus in the pouring rain, even when it felt like a burden. It turned out to be the best decision I ever made.
Would you say yes to getting on that bus? Your dream may just depend on it.
